Wamalwa: I am ready to support Edwin Sifuna’s presidential bid

By , May 16, 2026

Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has openly stated that he is ready to throw his support behind Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna should his prospects of becoming president be high.

While speaking during an interview on Herman Manyora’s podcast aired on Friday, May 16, 2026, Wamalwa, when asked by the host whether he is ready to shelve his presidential ambitions in support of his kinsman Edwin Sifuna, responded by saying, “Why not?”

The former defence minister further stated that both the united opposition and the Linda Mwananchi camp are behind the “Wantam” banner and will not hesitate to work together in their bid to unseat the current regime, which they all disagree with.

He added that at one point, the two camps will sit down and agree on a single candidate to face President William Ruto.

“We are ready to sacrifice; we are ready to bear any burden to make sure wantam becomes a reality.”

His fellow principals within the United Opposition, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have also recently made similar remarks.

He urged the Sifuna team to join the united opposition camp, saying that despite each principal harbouring presidential ambitions, they will all be willing to step down and rally behind one member of the Linda Mwananchi coalition if their prospects are high.

This also comes a time when Wamalwa has been courting Sifuna to join his Party instead of forming a new outfit

When Sifuna was staring at a possible ouster from the ODM party. Wamalwa stated that his Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) Secretary General, Eseli Simiyu, has agreed to step down from his position and allow Sifuna to take over the role should he be chased from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Sifuna to replace Eseli

Wamalwa furrhter noted that after assessing the popularity and potential of Sifuna, Simiyu agreed that should Sifuna’s position in ODM become untenable, he should join DAP-K, take over the role, and continue performing the duties of secretary general, just as he has been doing while in the Orange party.

“I have talked to Sifuna and Osotsi, and they have assured me that should things go bad in ODM, they will join DAP-K. My secretary general in DAP-K, Eseli Simiyu, has accepted to step down and leave the SG position to Sifuna should he be chased out of ODM, because of the potential Sifuna has,” Wamalwa said.
