Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has challenged Kenyan women to vie for leadership positions in politics and business.

The current holder of chair of Governors Council has told women that the need to have them in leadership and their actual pro-activeness to go for elective and appointive positions is what will make the difference.

During a Ladies in Leadership Breakfast Event held at  Royal Nairobi Golf Club, Waiguru reiterated that women need to work towards nurturing skills by making applications whenever opportunities arise.

“While some people are born with intrinsic leadership abilities, such traits need to be nurtured in order to enable one fulfill their purpose. Again there is great need for those who want to lead to come out and front themselves for various positions,” said the Governor.

The second term Governor urged women to believe in themselves,be intentional and have the courage to go for what they want. She added that though success may not come in the first instance, those who want to succeed should not give up but must keep on trying. She shared some of her experiences as she climbed the corporate political leadership ladder. She said that her desire to transform public service delivery pushed her to take up top leadership positions where she could actualize some of the proposals she had made.

The former Cabinet Secretary in Uhuru Kenyatta administration also stressed on the need for seasoned women leaders to mentor younger ones adding that she is a firm campaigner of two-thirds gender rule and has mentored many women and put others in positions where they sharpen their skills for higher positions. She added that she has always recommended women for top positions whenever she has an opportunity to sit at high level decision making tables.
