Lawyer Wahome Thuku has agreed with Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) risks losing elective seats in Nairobi in the 2027 General Election.

Thuku used his Facebook account on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, to communicate his position.

In the same post, he also praised former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Dr Fred Matiang’i, expressing confidence in his leadership should he win the presidency.

“RIGATHI Gachagua has said something which I believe is true. That ODM will not get a single seat in Nairobi since they are supporting William Samoei Ruto, who has no votes in Nairobi,” Thuku wrote.

The lawyer was referring to recent remarks by Gachagua, who has repeatedly argued that ODM’s working relationship with President William Ruto could cost the party political support, particularly in Nairobi.

In the same statement, Thuku appealed to Luo voters in Nairobi, saying they would receive equal treatment under a government led by Matiang’i.

“Let me address the Luo in Nairobi since they are the majority ODM supporters.

“When Dr Fred Matiang’i becomes the 6th President of Kenya, he will attend to everyone equally, regardless of party affiliations. Regardless of who they would have voted for as their president,” he said.

Thuku further argued that Matiang’i’s leadership would not discriminate against any section of the country.

“His policies will cut through ages, status, classes, religions, tribes, races, gender, etc.”

He also said he believes Kenya is moving away from ethnic-based politics.

“The politics of tribal supremacy, shareholding na kupanga Nairobi, are ending this coming year since they are already outdated.”

Thuku’s remarks come as political parties continue positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Nairobi expected to remain one of the country’s most fiercely contested political battlegrounds.

In the 2022 General Election, the capital city produced highly competitive contests across the presidential, gubernatorial and parliamentary races, underlining its importance to both the ruling coalition and the opposition.

Neither ODM nor President Ruto had publicly responded to Thuku’s latest remarks by the time of publication.

While Thuku believes ODM could lose Nairobi because of its support for the broad-based arrangement with President Ruto’s administration, the party has continued to maintain that its decisions are guided by national interest.

Whether that position will affect its electoral fortunes in 2027 remains a matter for voters to decide at the ballot.
