President William Ruto’s close ally and Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has dismissed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s comments about removing the head of state from power.

During the launch of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) headquarters in Karen, Nairobi, on January 27, 2025, Gachagua, alongside other DAP-K leaders, expressed their commitment to ensuring that President Ruto serves only one term.

They stated that this would be achieved through partnerships with like-minded Kenyans and other parties to address what they described as bad governance, corruption, and dictatorship.

“I want to give my commitment to the almighty and our supporters who are many, they are in millions, that we are part of a team and we will walk this journey together to liberate this country, and we shall make whatever sacrifices necessary to make sure William Ruto is a one-term president,” Gachagua said.

In response, Sudi criticized Gachagua on January 29, 2025, arguing that President Ruto had supported him when others did not want him as the running mate in the lead-up to the 2022 general elections.

“On the day we discussed who would be the deputy president, you know very well that when they first voted, you received only four votes. In the second round, you also received four votes. In the third round, it was the same. Everyone was backing Kindiki. But who stood by you till the very end? It was William Samoei Ruto. He supported you through it all,” Sudi stated.

In a statement posted on his official X account on January 29, 2025, Sudi accused Gachagua of trying to gain public sympathy through his remarks.

“You have now morphed into a crybaby, whipping up emotions to gain public sympathy. Visibly, you have selective amnesia,” Sudi wrote.

He described Gachagua’s recent behaviour as deceptive, advising him to stop speaking negatively about Ruto.

“You are now pretending to be a staunch Kenyan, but you are a dangerous man. Stop talking about William Ruto; he tried every possible way to elevate you in the political arena,” Sudi said.

Shameful

Sudi’s remarks came after Deputy President Kithure Kindiki mocked Gachagua’s statements, pointing out that it was shameful for Gachagua to make unseating Ruto his primary objective.

Kindiki criticized Gachagua’s approach, stating that Ruto has achieved much as the head of state.

He expressed confidence that Ruto was focused on fulfilling promises to Kenyans and would make a significant impact even without a second term.

“There was someone in office today; he is not here now, yet he’s giving us ultimatums from funerals about how he will make Ruto a one-term president, as if that’s an achievement. Ruto’s goal is not to serve two terms but to utilize the time God grants him in office to implement transformative programs and then step aside so others can lead Kenya forward. So, don’t come here threatening us with your one-term agenda,” Kindiki said.
