United Opposition leaders storm Murang’a ahead of Mt Kenya tours
By Mabonga Makhanu, February 1, 2026Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has arrived in Murang’a County ahead of a United Opposition tour around the Mt Kenya region.
Locals overwhelmingly received him at Mathioya Church on Sunday, February 1, 2026, where he is set to attend a church service before holding a rally at Gitugi Center in the company of opposition leaders, ahead of a grand rally in Othaya town.
He was previously attacked in Othaya last Sunday, which forced him to postpone the roadside rally. He is expected to return to Othaya later today to address his supporters.
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i also attended the church with his entourage. Other opposition leaders accompanying the former Deputy President include PLP party leader Martha Karua, Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa, Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi, and DCP deputy party leader Cleophas Malala.
This follows the attack at Witeta ACK Church in Othaya town, where churchgoers were exposed to tear gas smoke, with some collapsing. Gachagua’s logistics were destroyed, forcing him to escape through the bush with his security team, who donned clergy attire to protect him.
United oppositions match

Following the incident, the united opposition marched to the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to present their complaint and demand accountability.
They questioned why the state has remained silent despite multiple complaints from their team.
They have given the IG an ultimatum until February 16, 2026, to ensure that all police officers involved are arrested, or they will stage nationwide demonstrations calling for their arrest.
United Opposition’s presidential quest

This comes at a time when the united opposition is preparing to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 polls.
They are set for a two-day retreat on February 12, 2026, where they will discuss the way forward for their coalition, agree on the coalition’s name, and decide on the criteria for selecting their presidential flag bearer.
They have also organised countrywide tours to sensitise the public, especially young people, to register as voters.
