Uhuru to broker deal in Turkana governor contest
President Uhuru Kenyatta will today mediate talks between former Mining and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary John Munyes and Turkana South legislator James Lomenen as he seeks to find a suitable candidate to fly a Jubilee party ticket in the Turkana governor race.
Munyes and Lomenen are seeking to succeed outgoing Governor Josephat Nanok.
The duo failed to agree through consensus on who will fly the Jubilee ticket in the race that has attracted four aspirants including Loima MP Jeremiah Lomorukai (ODM) and John Lodepe (United Democratic Alliance).
Jubilee will, however, rely on intelligence opinion polls to decide who between incumbent Mohamed Ali Lokiru and his predecessor Nicholas Ngikor will fly its ticket in the Turkana East constituency.
Lokiru is backing Lomenen’s first stab at the governor’s seat while Ngikor alongside Turkana Senator Malachy Ekal have thrown their weight behind Munyes.
Jubilee will, however, award a direct ticket to incumbent Woman Rep Joyce Emanikor (pictured).
Lomenen, a second term MP, says he is best suited to fly the Jubilee ticket. Munyes on the other hand is a former MP and senator, who tried unsuccessfully to wrestle the seat from Governor Nanok in 2017 polling over 53,000 votes against the incumbent’s 73,000.
He claims to be the most experienced Turkana leader having served in several other influential positions in Government.
Munyes has appealed to residents to elect an experienced leader, who can prudently use the county’s resources to end poverty and perennial hunger.
Lomenen has categorically said he decamped from UDA over alleged unfairness and many underhand dealings that would have frustrated his gubernatorial bid.
