Despite some criticism from a section of Kenyans, there are moments of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta that will stick in the memories of Kenyans.

And as we come to the end of 2022, we take a look at some of his most memorable moments of the year.

Uhuru endorses Raila for presidency

On February 23, 2022, during Sagana III meeting, Uhuru officially endorsed ODM leader Raila Odinga for the presidency.

Uhuru urged his community to back Raila’s bid saying he had the best interests for the country.

“I’m asking you to support Raila Odinga as he means well for the country. When “my young man reforms”, we will consider him,” Uhuru told the delegates at the meeting.

The declaration sparked mixed reactions but true to his word, he offered Raila support all the way to the ballot.

Uhuru’s peaceful handover of power

Following the Supreme Court ruling upholding William Ruto’s win, the then-president pledged to oversee a smooth transition to the next administration despite the decision not going his way.

While questioning the consistency of the decision reached by the seven judges in dismissing a petition filed by his preferred presidential candidate Raila Odinga, Uhuru committed to handing over power to Ruto peacefully, which he did.

When the time to hand over power came, Uhuru turned up at Kasarani to usher in the new president to Kenyans despite much speculation about whether Kenyatta would even attend the ceremony, given that he had not seen eye-to-eye with his deputy since 2018, or even congratulated him on his victory.

It was all hugs, smiles, and laughs as he handed over the instruments of power to Kenya’s fifth president, William Ruto.

Uhuru’s light moment with a female supporter

The retired president sparked a light moment at the Nakuru Railway Station in July when he recommissioned the rehabilitated 217-kilometre facility.

The former president was speaking about the development projects he had overseen when a female member of the audience exclaimed, “Uhuru, we love you!”

Uhuru who was mid-speech, posed for a while and responded, “I love you too.” Thank you,” to the lady eliciting applause and laughter from the audience. The young lady was seated about 40 meters from the podium.

In another unusual occurrence, the president had to instruct his security guards not to assault a woman who attempted to catch his attention after he finished his speech.

Honouring his promise to a Narok Primary School

After almost a month of keeping low-key in his retirement, the former president resurfaced on October 15, 2022, to honour his promise by donating a school bus to Partakilat Primary School in Narok County.

Uhuru personally delivered the 53-seater bus, posing for photos with students and teachers before waving them goodbye.

The former president appeared to be in good spirits while interacting with the pupils. In one of the photos, he was seen with a group of children and teachers, carrying a young girl and smiling at her.

The event occurred just a few days after a photo of him exiting a hotel in Narok County surfaced online.
