Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has praised aspirants seeking the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket in the upcoming Mbeere North by-election for stepping down and supporting one candidate.

Speaking on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Karambari Centre in Mbeere North, Embu County, Kindiki said the gesture showed leadership, selflessness, and political maturity within the ruling party.

“As a party, we are delighted that all our aspirants have agreed to endorse one candidate. This demonstrates unity and strengthens our democracy,” he said.

The decision followed consultations within UDA, where seven other aspirants withdrew their bids in favour of Leonard Muthende, who will officially receive the party’s nomination certificate next week. Former MP Charles Muriuki Njagagua, one of the aspirants, has been tasked with leading the UDA campaign secretariat, supported by the other candidates who stepped down.

Kindiki urged youth in the constituency to voice their opinions and participate actively in shaping leadership. He also thanked the immediate former MP Geoffrey Ruku, now Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, for his contributions.

Opposition faces new challenges

However, the United Opposition’s DCP party has seen cracks. Duncan Mbui announced he will run as an independent, accusing his party of acting as a “members club” and deliberately blocking his ambition and that of the KivuiKivui fraternity.

“We have always been independent and shall win as INDEPENDENT,” Mbui said.

Adding to the contest, the Democratic Party (DP) earlier unveiled Newton Kariuki, popularly known as Newton Karish, as its flag bearer for the by-election. Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi and ex-Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti jointly endorsed Karish, praising his record of service in Mumenji Ward and deep community roots. Muturi stressed the importance of unity, organisation, and delivering leadership that reflects the will of the people.

Muthende, in his acceptance speech, pledged to work with all former aspirants and residents to secure a strong victory for UDA.

“This unity provides a solid foundation for our campaign. I promise to collaborate with all stakeholders to deliver meaningful development for Mbeere North,” he said.
