Three-quarter of development in Homa Bay achieved under KK govt – Wanga

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has attributed the massive infrastructural development undertaken in the county to the Kenya Kwanza government under President William Ruto.

Speaking while delivering her address during the ongoing devolution conference on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the county boss termed the onset of the broad-based government as critical to the rapid development undertaken in the region.

She stated that much has been achieved through the partnership undertaken by the county and the national government, despite the region not having voted for Ruto.

“I want to thank you for your partnership in transforming Homa Bay to make it worthy of hosting this conference. When you last visited Homa Bay in January 2023. Three-quarters of the development seen here was not there. I was an opposition governor, and there was no broad-based government and no partnership. But you had no intention of leaving us behind simply because of how we voted in the election in which you were voted as the president,” she stated.

Among the projects cited by the governor were the dualling of the main highway in Homa Bay Town, the region’s Lake Pier, an infrastructural project meant to revamp the town’s infrastructure and improve access to Lake Victoria’s islands. The project’s construction and rehabilitation started in 2023.

The pier was tipped to be a crucial link for the region and areas such as Kisumu County, Entebbe and Jinja in Uganda, and Mwanza in Tanzania, among other key trade partners, hence promoting seamless transport and connectivity and deepening regional integration.

Additionally, the pier facilitated the creation of direct and indirect employment opportunities for thousands of households within the county.

Wanga further thanked the Senate, Council of Governors, and County Assembly members for facilitating the hosting of the devolution conference.

The 2025 edition of the national devolution conference is taking place at Homa Bay High School under the theme “For the People, For Prosperity: Devolution as a Catalyst for Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice.”

The conference is held as a forum for reviewing the progress of county governments, assessing policy frameworks, and shaping the future of devolved governance.
