Three MPs downplay Matiang’i’s aspiration for presidency in 2027

Three MPs have downplayed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s presidential quest, saying he cannot defeat President William Ruto in the next General Election.
Kuria West lawmaker Mathias Robi noted that the United Democratic Alliance is organised and will ensure Ruto is re-elected for a second term. Robi said that was why in last election, Ruto managed to defeat a candidate for the Azimio la Umoja coalition who was backed by top government leaders.
“If they never managed last time, they cannot do it now,” Robi said at Marani Stadium, Kitutu Chache North constituency, Kisii County, during a funds drive for Marani parish church projects yesterday.
However, Kapseret legislator Oscar Sudi told members of the Gusii community to leave the former CS alone, pointing out that he has not announced his quest for presidency. The MP said the Ex-CS arrived from the US a few days ago to visit relatives and urged members of the community to continue supporting government projects.
“You have been in opposition for long. This is the first time you are in the government and a lot of projects are being implemented in the Gusii community,” Sudi told the congregation.
Sudi said Ruto has been at the helm for two and half years, noting he needs time to implement projects as per his manifesto to benefit Kenyans, adding, the government has plans to boost lives of boda boda operators, women and youths.
South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro also challenged Gusii leaders to work with the Kenya Kwanza government till the president completes his term for the community to benefit, saying, it will be wrong to fight the government.
“Our problem is some of us want to leave it (government) when opposition leaders have joined it and their communities are gaining” Osoro, who is also the majority Chief Whip, said.
Not leaving
Area MP Japhet Nyakundi said the area had realised several projects. He noted that it was the first time since independence roads in the area were being tarmacked and urged residents to be patient and give the president time to work to benefit Kenyans.
“The government has waived Sh100 million owed to farmers affiliated to the Sombogo tea factory. Markets and roads are being constructed in the constituency. That is what my people want,” Nyakundi told the congregation.
West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka said the government has a budget of Sh4 trillion and it will be wrong for leaders from the Gusii community to quit it in a huff.
He challenged leaders from the community to unite for the community to benefit from the funds, stressing, he will not be influenced to leave the government.
