Former nominated MP and trade unionist Wilson Sossion has dismissed the move by the Democratic Party (DP) to leave the Kenya Kwanza coalition terming it as inconsequential.

The party, allied with Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, expressed its interest in disassociating with the ruling coalition having written to Kenya Kwanza a 30-day notice on March 7, 2025, indicating their decision to exit.

The move comes days after the Kenya Kwanza administration recently entered a coalition agreement with ODM.

Speaking during a live TV interview on Thursday, March 13, 2025, Sossion, a former nominated MP by the ODM party, downplayed the party from having any significant impact to the union.

Inconsequential

The former KNUT official also faulted the timing of the move saying it is coinciding with ODM’s entry into the government.

“From the little knowledge I have that exit is inconsequential. It is democratic for the party to exit as they exit others are coming. ODM, is coming in with troops of many MPs and a firm agreement in place. Taking a divergent political position is one of the greatest values of our political democracy,” he quipped.

“How many MPS does the party have? I don’t want to wade into the debate. They made their decision, its public and they’re free to leave but I say from where I am; the president’s desire to stabilize the political ecosystem through the broad-based is not going to stop. It is a philosophy designed to outlive the leadership of individuals in this country,” he added.

Speaking during a live TV interview on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Muturi opined on the party’s decision stating that they remain at liberty to make the decision if it was in their best interest.

“I just saw the letter. They are at liberty to make whatever decisions they feel is in the best interest of the party,” Muturi said.

Asked whether the leadership of the party had informed him as the former party leader on the decision to exit, Muturi said the party was under no obligation to inform him after he resigned from the party in October 2022, to take up the position of Attorney-General.
