Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has confirmed that his Democratic Party (DP) has expressed interest in exiting the Kenya-Kwanza coalition.

Speaking during a live TV interview on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Muturi revealed that he had read the letter and that the party was at liberty to make the decision if it was in their best interest.

“I just saw the letter. They are at liberty to make whatever decisions they feel is in the best interest of the party,” Muturi said.

Asked whether the leadership of the party had informed him as the former party leader on the decision to exit, Muturi said the party was under no obligation to inform him after he resigned from the party in October 2022, to take up the position of Attorney-General.

Decision to exit Kenya-Kwanza

“They did not have to inform me about their decision to write to the Registrar of Political Parties (RPP) about their decision to exit the coalition.”

DP through its chairman Esau Kioni and Secretary-General Jacob Haji gave the Kenya-Kwanza coalition a 30-day notice on March 7, 2025, in a letter indicating their decision to exit.

Muturi also revealed that he was rightfully in government by virtue of the coalition agreement and that he actively participated in the 2022 campaigns for President William Ruto.

Still in government

“I am still in government because I’m still in that coalition and secondly, I participated actively in campaigning for Kenya-Kwanza in the 2022 general election, and therefore, I am perfectly within my rights to be in government.”

The outspoken Cabinet Secretary has been at the forefront of leading a flurry of criticisms against some of the government policies in the Kenya-Kwanza administration.

In January 2025, Muturi called a press conference and registered his frustration with the government for failing to provide answers after his son Leslie was abducted, kept incommunicado and only released after he approached Ruto over the matter.

Since the daring interview, Muturi has been barraged by attacks from politicians allied to the ruling administration, with several of them calling for his resignation.

The firebrand CS, however, notes that he should be praised and not vilified for calling for an end to abductions and enforced disappearances.

“It is not the government policy to abduct or have people killed. Speaking against that cannot be grounds for anybody to resign from government,” Muturi said.

“I should be congratulated for restating the government position.”
