Sossion backs Ruto’s demand for action on MPs’ corruption

Former nominated MP Wilson Sossion has thrown his weight behind President William Ruto’s recent accusations that Members of Parliament have been soliciting bribes from along their constitutional lines of duty.

Speaking on a local radio station on Thursday morning, August 14, 2025, the former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General reacted after President Ruto publicly directed the National Assembly and Senate speakers to take action against the alleged misconduct.

“Mr Speaker, it can’t continue to be business as usual. It is not possible that committees of Parliament demand to be bribed, demand to be paid for them to write reports or look the other way for what is happening in either the county or national government,” Ruto said after officially opening a devolution conference in Homa Bay County.

The Head of State made his remarks moments after opening the 2025 Devolution Conference in Homa Bay County on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. Coming to the quick defence of Ruto, Sossion dismissed any notion that the President’s remarks were politically motivated or speculative.

President’s statements not propaganda

“When a President makes a statement, it is not propaganda because a president has a state infrastructure for getting accurate information about what happens in all sections of the government,” Sossion said, stressing that anything said by the President is grounded in credible intelligence rather than hearsay.

Sossion further urged the country to take decisive legislative action against graft, stating that the time had come to fully criminalise corruption through stringent laws that leave no room for impunity.

“It has reached a time where this country needs to fully criminalise corruption through legislation,” he added, underscoring the need for Parliament to lead by example in the fight against graft.

President Ruto’s remarks have stirred heated debate within political circles, with some leaders welcoming his bold stance while others criticising his statements.

Speaking on a local radio show on Thursday, August 14, 2025, former UDA Nominated Orwoba claimed that her earlier exposé on corruption in the legislature was met with hostility, including a suspension from Parliament, while similar sentiments expressed by the Head of State were now being embraced.
