Sifuna vows to cut State House budget if opposition wins power in 2027

By , June 14, 2026

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has pledged that an opposition government would significantly reduce State House expenditure.

Speaking during a heated address at the Linda Mwananchi rally held at Kivulini Grounds in Thika on Sunday, June 14, 2026, Sifuna argued that public funds should be redirected to development and relief for ordinary Kenyans.

The Linda Mwanananchi movement leader said Kenya could no longer sustain what he termed as excessive spending at the top of government while citizens struggle with rising costs of living.

Kitu ya kwanza tutakata budget ya State House,” Sifuna told the crowd, drawing loud cheers from supporters.

The Nairobi senator questioned government spending priorities, suggesting that some allocations within the executive were not aligned with the country’s economic realities, especially the reported time-to-time renovation works at State House.

Inawezekana aje kila wiki unabadilisha mabati ya State House kwa sababu uko na pesa ya wananchi?” he posed, implying that public resources were being used for non-essential upgrades.

Call for fiscal discipline in government

Sifuna argued that many leaders within the opposition had the education and expertise required to restructure public expenditure and improve efficiency in government operations.

Hawa wako hapa wamesoma, wamehitimu na wanajua we can cut public spending na tuweze kuleta afueni kwa watu wetu,” he added.

The senator’s remarks form part of a broader opposition narrative pushing for austerity measures, accountability in public finance, and reallocation of resources towards social and economic development programmes.

Sifuna said an opposition administration would prioritise reducing what he termed “wasteful spending” in government and redirect the funds towards easing the burden on citizens.

Part of wider Linda Mwananchi campaign

The Thika rally is part of the ongoing Linda Mwananchi political tour, which has seen opposition leaders traverse different regions, mobilising support ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The coalition brings together a group of political leaders positioning themselves as an alternative to the current administration led by President William Ruto, with Siaya Governor James Orengo describing the Thika rally as the largest crowd he had ever witnessed in the town.

Other prominent figures who attended the rally included several opposition-aligned MPs and governors, who used the platform to criticise government policies and highlight their vision for economic reform.

Growing political pressure ahead of 2027

Sifuna’s remarks are expected to add to the intensifying political debate over public spending, fiscal discipline, and governance as the country edges closer to the next electoral cycle.

While supporters of the opposition welcomed the proposal as a step toward reducing government excess, critics are likely to challenge the practicality of cutting key executive budgets such as State House operations.

The Linda Mwananchi movement has continued to position itself as a reform-driven coalition seeking to reshape Kenya’s governance priorities, with leaders increasingly focusing on economic messaging and public accountability.
