Sifuna rejects second ODM ouster, says party has repeated February illegality

By , June 23, 2026

Edwin Sifuna has rejected the decision by Orange Democratic Movement to remove him as Secretary-General for a second time, accusing the party of repeating what he termed the same flawed and unconstitutional process that had earlier been challenged in court in February.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi team said the latest decision by the ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) was procedurally defective and violated the party’s own constitution, adding that the matter would once again be taken to court.

Sifuna says process was illegal

The Nairobi Senator maintained that the second attempt to remove him from office mirrors the earlier February decision that had already faced legal scrutiny over fairness and due process.

“Late last evening, we were made aware of the decision by the ODM Party NEC purporting, for the second time, to remove the SG Hon. Edwin Sifuna from office. On the face of it, the decision bears similarities with the first one in February; unprocedural, unfair and contrary to the party’s constitution,” the statement said.

The statement further confirmed that Sifuna’s legal team had already been consulted and preparations were underway for another court challenge.

“After consultation with our legal teams earlier this morning, it has been decided to once again test the propriety of the purported ouster in the courts because we are convinced it should suffer the same fate as the first one in February,” the statement added.

ODM says NEC endorsed removal

The latest standoff comes barely a day after ODM officially announced Sifuna’s removal from the powerful Secretary-General position following an internal disciplinary process.

Speaking on Monday, June 22, 2026, ODM interim Secretary-General Catherine Omanyo said the party’s Internal Dispute Resolution Committee had reviewed the complaint against Sifuna before forwarding recommendations to the NEC.

“After going through the report and the findings… the NEC unanimously resolved to adopt the committee’s recommendation and endorsed the removal from office of Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna,” Omanyo said.

Fresh legal battle looms

ODM has defended the move, insisting the process complied with party rules and constitutional procedures, while citing earlier guidance by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal on internal party discipline.

The fresh court battle now sets the stage for another major political showdown within ODM, deepening divisions over Sifuna’s leadership and widening cracks inside one of Kenya’s biggest opposition parties.
