Sifuna: I will reclaim everything I lost after Raila’s death
By Aloys Michael, July 25, 2026Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has said he would reclaim every political position he lost following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, expressing confidence that the opposition was rebuilding its strength ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on Saturday, July 25, 2026, during the opposition’s Linda Mwananchi tour in Trans Nzoia County, Sifuna said he remained confident the setbacks he suffered within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) would be reversed within the next year.
“When Baba left me as Secretary-General, I was also the Senate Deputy Minority Whip,” Sifuna told supporters at Sibanga.
“After Baba passed on, locusts invaded. They took everything from me. They took away my position as Secretary-General and even my position as Deputy Whip.”
The party formally removed him from his position as Secretary-General following a party disciplinary process that endorsed recommendations of its internal dispute resolution committee.
Speaking on Monday, June 22, 2026, ODM interim Secretary General Catherine Omanyo said the decision followed a review conducted in line with the party constitution.
“The party’s internal dispute resolution committee that was constituted in accordance with Article 51-3-F of the party constitution heard and determined the complaint concerning Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna in his capacity as the Secretary-General,” Omanyo said.
She added that the National Executive Committee (NEC) adopted the committee’s findings and recommendations without dissent.
Without naming the individuals he was referring to, Sifuna said he expected to recover the positions within the next 12 months.
“But within the next 12 months, everything that was eaten by the locusts will be restored,” he said.
Sifuna said the opposition had lost momentum following Raila’s death but argued that recent political tours across different parts of the country showed it was regaining support.
“We have travelled across Kenya. We have been to the Coast, Narok and among the Maasai. There are no votes for Kasongo there,” he said, using a political nickname for President William Ruto.
Earlier, Sifuna said opposition leaders would field a single presidential candidate to challenge Ruto in the 2027 election, adding that consultations involving leaders from different regions were ongoing.
He also thanked Kenyans for supporting the opposition’s activities through public donations, saying contributions from ordinary citizens were helping finance the movement’s nationwide campaigns.
“They said we don’t have money, but the paybill is bringing in money every day. I thank Kenyans for the many Ksh10 contributions. We don’t need Kasongo’s money; we will walk with the power of the citizens,” he said.
The opposition has used the Linda Mwananchi rallies to mobilise supporters across the country as political parties position themselves ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.
