The scramble for Mathira parliamentary United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket has kicked off a day after the party asked interested people to apply.

The ticket went up for grabs after the area MP Rigathi Gachagua was appointed as Deputy President William Ruto’s running mate ahead of the August 9 presidential election.

Among those who have expressed interest to vie for the seat with UDA ticket is Konyu Member of County Assembly (MCA) Eric Wamumbi who was to vie for a second term in his ward on the UDA ticket.

Wamumbi, who is a first-time MCA, said he is the right person to succeed Gachagua, and he even promised to safeguard his development record by ensuring fairness in bursary disbursement, upgrading of learning institutions, and improvement of roads.

“I am making a promise to the people of Mathira that I will finish all pending projects as a matter of priority and initiate new ones,” he said.

Wamumbi best for UDA ticket

Several MCAs from the constituency are supporting the move adding that Wamumbi’s track record is admirable and they have high hopes in him that he’s a man who will retain the development record by Gachagua.

The MCAs among them Samuel Kabatha and Erastus Karanja of Iriaini and Ruguru ward respectively said that Wamumbi has a proven legislative record in the county assembly hoping that he will continue with the same should he get elected as an MP.

On Tuesday, Gachagua had asked his supporters during the burial ceremony of his late brother James Reriani to allow him to recommend his successor to them.

“Will you allow me to name my successor who will continue with my development record now that I have a bigger assignment in Nairobi?” He posed. The residents responded in affirmative.
