Salasya shifts stance on planned visits to Luo Nyanza counties

Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has changed his mind about skipping parts of the Nyanza region during his ongoing nationwide tour.
In a statement shared on his Instagram page on Thursday, June 5, 2025, the vocal first-time lawmaker promised to visit Homa Bay, Migori, Siaya, and Kisumu counties after his planned homecoming event.
Salasya, who rose to fame through his theatrical appearances on the internet, said the visit would happen two weeks after his homecoming this coming weekend.
“Homa Bay, Migori, Siaya and Kisumu, trust me, I will come after my homecoming on Saturday, definitely two weeks from now,” Salasya stated.

This is a shift from his earlier announcement in May 2025, where he declared he would deliberately avoid Kisumu, Siaya, and Migori. These counties are traditionally strongholds of ODM leader Raila Odinga.
At the time, Salasya explained that he would begin his tour with youth leaders in his home area of Kisumundogo, before moving through five counties in Western Kenya.
He also outlined plans to visit the Coast, Eastern, Mt Kenya, Narok, Kajiado, Wajir, Garisa, Isiolo, and Kisii, eventually wrapping up the tour in Nairobi.
He had excluded Kisumu, Siaya, and Migori from the itinerary, fueling speculation of growing tensions between him and Raila Odinga.
“I will again meet all youth leaders in my home of Kisumundogo before we start it off on another long journey of 5 counties of Western Kenya. Tukitoka Western tunaingia Coast, from Coast to Eastern to Mt Kenya to Narok, Kajiado, then we shall go to Wajir, Garisa, and Isiolo, then Kisii. Areas I will not go to are Kisumu, Siaya, and Migori. Nairobi will be the last region,” he revealed.
Salasya has been increasingly critical of both Raila and President William Ruto. During his tour of Western Kenya, he accused Raila of failing to deliver tangible benefits to the Luhya community, despite their years of political loyalty.

He also cast doubt on Ruto’s sugarcane farmers’ bonus initiative, questioning the source of the funds and positioning himself as a more honest advisor to the president.
Cutting ties with ODM
In early April 2025, Salasya issued a statement saying the Luhya community was officially cutting political ties with ODM.
“We have stood with Raila Amolo Odinga through thick and thin. We have voted for him loyally in every election, even when others doubted,” he said.
He lamented what he described as years of systematic marginalisation of Luhyas in national leadership and policymaking, despite their consistent support for Raila in every election.
“It is the Luo community that benefits most when it comes to national appointments and decisions,” he noted.
He expressed frustration that while the Luhya community has always voted for Raila, it is the Luo community that appears to benefit most from his political influence, especially in national appointments.
According to Salasya, the Luhyas have been used as a political tool for too long, providing votes, but getting little in return. He claimed that many Luhya voters, including those in Nairobi, are beginning to distance themselves from ODM.
The lawmaker has in the past also warned leaders from both ODM and UDA that they risk losing support from the Luhya community unless they address its long-standing grievances.
