Ruto says he will win 2027 election with 2–3 million vote margin
By Mustafa Juma, January 26, 2026President William Ruto has declared that he is targeting a landslide victory in the 2027 General Election, saying he wants to win by a margin of between two and three million votes.
Speaking at State House during the UDA National Governing Council (NGC) meeting on Monday, January 26, 2026, Ruto said lessons from past political turbulence had informed the formation of the current broad-based government, which he described as a success.
“As we talk today, we have a broad-based government arrangement. Tulikuwa na matatizo, makelele, fujo, na maandamano, na tukasema in every challenge, there is a silver lining, and there is opportunity if you look carefully. In that challenge, we decided to create an opportunity out of it,” Ruto said.

The Head of State went ahead to note that the partnership between the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) had proven effective, arguing that it had helped calm political temperatures and improve governance.
“Today, we have a broad-based government with our friends the ODM party, and we have agreed that this broad-based government has worked. It is said that if it is working, don’t fix it,” he said.
Ruto revealed that discussions are already underway between UDA and ODM leadership on the possibility of forming a coalition ahead of the next election.
He said the goal is to avoid a narrowly contested race like the 2022 election, which he won by a margin of about 200,000 votes.
2027 vote margin
Ruto expressed confidence that he was going to win the upcoming 2027 presidential race with a margin of between 2,000,000 and 3,000,000 votes.
“We have agreed with the leadership of ODM to explore options and opportunities for having a coalition going into the next election. Hii election inakuja, we want to win by a margin of between two and three million. The last election we won by a margin of 200,000 votes, but this coming election, we must win by a margin of 2 to 3 million ndo tuunganishe Kenya na tutembee pamoja,” Ruto said.

Ruto’s remarks come amid shifting political alliances and growing speculation about the future of the broad-based government arrangement, which has divided the ODM party into two factions.
While a faction led by the ODM party leader Oburu Odinga, who is tasked with leading structured talks with the UDA party ahead of the 2027 elections, supports a broad-based government, another faction led by the party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna is opposed to the arrangement.
Compromised NDC
Suba South Member of Parliament (MP) Caroli Omondi has claimed that the ODM party is facing a serious internal crisis, claiming that the faction led by Oburu has already predetermined the outcome of the party’s upcoming National Delegates Convention (NDC).
Speaking on Monday, January 26, 2026, during an interview with one of the local TV stations, Omondi said two distinct factions have clearly emerged within ODM, with one camp having already decided on the party’s leadership and political direction even before elections are conducted.

He also cautioned the ODM rebels led by Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi against placing faith in the planned NDC, claiming the process is already compromised.
According to Omondi, the ODM Linda Ground engagement that is being conducted by the Oburu-led faction is a process aimed at compromising the delegates across all the counties, and when the NDC is finally called, they will vote as directed.
“Let me advise my friends Edwin Sifuna, James Orengo, Babu Owino, and Osotsi that the NDC they are calling for is already rigged. That is why these other guys are going round in very big tents, selecting the delegates,” Omondi remarked.
