Ruto mocks opposition, targets Gachagua in fresh attack
President William Ruto has launched a scathing attack on the opposition, singling out his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua in a fiery address during a development tour in Homa Bay County.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Rusinga Island Ring Roads project on Sunday, March 22, 2026, Ruto dismissed his critics in the United Opposition as disorganised and lacking a clear agenda, branding their ‘Alternative Government’ slogan as “Alternative Nothing.”
Direct hit at Gachagua
In a thinly veiled reference to Gachagua, the President criticised the Democracy for the Citizens (DCP) leader as a “one-term MP” whom he accused of poor performance during his time in parliament.
According to Ruto, Gachagua never debated or sponsored any motion or bill during his time in parliament.
“Alikuwa one-term MP; huko bunge hakuchangia debate yoyote, hakuna motion yoyote alileta. Huko bunge hakuna bill yoyote alileta. Kazi yake ni ukabila, na mitego na chuki,” Ruto said.
Ruto went further to declare that the former deputy president has no political future, asserting that he lacks the capacity to lead.
“Huyo jamaa tunamuambia, you have no space in the Republic of Kenya. You will lead nothing, you will lead nobody, and you will lead nowhere,” he added.

Ruto mocks the opposition
The Head of State also took aim at opposition leaders, whom he claimed had recently come together under a new political formation, dismissing them as ineffective and directionless.
“Sasa ati wameungana, wametengeneza kitu inaitwa Alternative Nothing. Wale watu wa opposition wale, opposition ambayo haijulikani inaoppose kitu gani. A good-for-nothing opposition. People without an agenda, plan, and vision,” Ruto said.
He described the group as lacking vision, plan, and leadership, insisting that they pose no real threat to his administration or the broad-based political alliance he has championed.
With the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party on his side in the broad-based government arrangement, Ruto vowed to crush the opposition very early during the 2027 presidential elections.
“Ati wanasema watanishindana na broad-based. Nyinyi mkiona wale watu wa alternative, nothing wanaeza shindana na broad-based? I am ready for you. Nitawamalizia asubuhi na mapema,” he said.

Gachagua, who was impeached in October 2024, has since positioned himself as a key figure in a reconfigured opposition bloc, often criticising the current administration.
Church leaders’ concerns
This comes days after clerics from the Pentecostal Voices of Kenya urged political leaders to exercise restraint following escalating public exchanges between Ruto and opposition figures.
Led by Habil Olembo, Secretary General of Pentecostal Voices of Kenya, they criticised both the President and his former deputy, Gachagua, for what he described as a lack of decorum, saying their conduct was embarrassing to Kenyans.
He termed the ongoing public outbursts as “verbal indiscipline”, warning that the exchanges point to a deeper concern about the state of political discourse in the country.
