Ruto-Gideon Moi handshake is a deal of two drowning men – Ndegwa Njiru

By , October 12, 2025

Lawyer and political commentator Ndegwa Njiru has poured cold water on the newly developing political relationship between President William Ruto and former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, describing it as a desperate union between two drowning men.

Through a statement shared on his X account on Sunday, October 12, 2025, Njiru suggested that the latest show of unity between the two leaders is not a sign of strength but one of political survival.

He argued that both Ruto and Moi are clinging to each other in an attempt to remain politically relevant.

“Fellow patriots, the Ruto–Gideon Moi handshake is nothing more than a case of two drowning men holding onto each other, hoping to float, but they will both sink,” Njiru said.

The lawyer’s comments come after Ruto’s recent meeting with Gideon Moi, which stirred discussions about shifting political alliances in the Rift Valley.

Njiru, however, believes that the handshake will not change how Kenyans perceive the current administration.

He claimed that Kenyans have already made up their minds about President Ruto’s leadership and that no political partnership would reverse the public’s growing frustration over the cost of living and economic struggles.

“President Ruto can’t campaign his way out of rejection, and no ‘union’ will erase the fact that Kenyans want him gone. His time is up, and the people have already moved on,” he added.

His remarks highlight the ongoing debate about whether new alliances can truly reshape Kenya’s political landscape or whether they simply represent survival tactics for leaders seeking fresh relevance.

As political temperatures continue to rise ahead of upcoming by-elections, Njiru’s comments add yet another voice to the growing list of leaders and commentators questioning the intentions behind the Ruto–Gideon Moi relationship, a development that may shape new political conversations in the weeks to come.
