Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly Robert Aalai has confirmed to have formally presented a personal statement in the Nairobi City County Assembly, raising concerns over the legality and constitutionality of the current Assembly Committees.

In his press statement released on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Alai noted that the Committees are the backbone of oversight, representation, and legislation in any devolved unit. He, however, said they become meaningless when the purpose behind their establishment is misplaced.

”When their establishment, membership, or operations are tainted by illegality or disregard of court orders, the very foundation of accountability is eroded,” Alai noted.

Rober Alai’s sentiments come at a time when the Nairobi Members of the County Assembly attempted to file an impeachment motion against Governor Johnson Sakaja before the timely intervention of President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga that temporarily halted the plot.

In his argument, Alai said he stands for a lawful and functional Assembly that is committed to delivering quality services to Nairobi County residents.

”Nairobi residents deserve a transparent, lawful, and functional Assembly where due process is respected without fear or favour. My Statement is not about personalities but about restoring integrity in the County Assembly. I have called for adherence to the Constitution, the County Governments Act, and our Standing Orders so that no committee operates outside the law. This is a call for institutional respect, lawful governance, and service to the people of Nairobi. The Assembly cannot demand compliance from citizens while failing to comply with its own laws,” Alai said.

Alai calls for Sakaja’s removal

On Sunday, September 21, 2025, Robert Alai faulted Nairobi City County leadership for allowing what he termed unregulated advertising billboards in the city, before he asked President Ruto to allow the impeachment motion against the embattled Nairobi boss to proceed.

”We have to wake up late at night to fight billboard thugs being permitted by Governor Sakaja. We appeal to President Ruto and Baba, let us remove Governor Sakaja. The Governor is going to suffocate Nairobi. These billboards are placed every 30 metres and are employed under the supervision of one Francis Mburu, Head of Operations in the Outdoors Advertising sector,” Alai said.

”The team is facilitated with the support and knowledge of Kileleshwa OCS Willy Bosire through Inspector Sheila Achitsa. We ask the IG of Police to immediately remove these police officers from the area as they have become a cartel of chaos and disorder in our midst,” he added.
