Raila to prove his election was ‘stolen’
Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga has vowed to prove his victory in the just-ended election was stolen.
Raila, who led a team of lieutenants including Wiper boss Kalonzo Musyoka and his running mate Martha Karua to a church service in Nairobi, exuded confidence of emerging victorious at the Supreme Court.
Speaking at the JTM church in Donholm, the former premier told congregants they “will show the world how the elections were rigged” and that their victory was stolen from them.
“Truth is going to be known because we already know it ourselves. We are going to show it wide and open starting tomorrow (today). We can see the looters have started to run away, trying to bribe, coerce, blackmail, intimidate but the spirit of Kenyans shall not be muzzled by the threats and intimidation of the looters,” he said.
Raila said they intend to pursue justice, adding the victory of the people will never be stolen. “We shall pursue them. We shall conquer them and capture all they have looted. The people spoke loudly on August 9. In the words of the late Desmond Tutu ‘without truth, there can never be justice, without justice there can be no peace, without peace there can be no reconciliation. There will be no reconciliation, there will be no peace, there will be no justice until truth is known.”
Already, Raila has lined up senior counsel Pheroze Nowrojee, Phillip Murgor, James Orengo and Amos Wako to file the petition starting today.
He told his supporters they should stand strong because they believe in God, adding they stand with them and that they will not be swayed, intimidated and blackmailed.
“There is no doubt in our mind the people spoke loudly on August 9. Their voice won’t be muzzled and their victory won’t be taken away.”
Pursue justice
Kalonzo said he was ready to pursue justice and asked Azimio supporters not to rest until they see the “salvation of God”.
He decried the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) delay in concluding by-elections for governor seats in Mombas and Kakamega, and four National Assembly seats in Kacheliba, Pokot South, Kitui Rural and Rongai.
“Please stand still and see the salvation of God. As far as I am concerned, the lawyer that is in me, the General Election is not over. What is happening in Kakamega and Mombasa have seen a situation where IEBC ends up shortchanging the whole country. No General Election has taken place,” said Kalonzo.
He went on: “This is a General Election that must be concluded. If there is general emergency, that is understandable. It was never anticipated that intimidation can stop the election. What intimidation would be carried out in Kitui Rural to occasion a postponement of an election? Is it the IEBC? Of course not?”
The Wiper leader also affirmed intimidation or harassment cannot be grounds for postponing an election, citing that the Constitution did not anticipate that there shall be a by-election, unless there’s a general emergency.
“I have never seen a body charged with the responsibility of conducting elections ending up shortchanging democracy. As far as I am concerned, and this may be canvassed in the Supreme Court, no general election has taken place.”
Karua said without justice there will never be a lasting peace, adding that the foundation of peace is justice.
“The truth shall set us free. Without justice, there can no be lasting peace. It is the foundation of lasting peace. All we are seeking is justice. For all these things to happen, we need God’s presence. We are here to seek the presence of God,” said Karua.
