Pauline Njoroge backs Sifuna for 2027 presidency over other opposition candidates

Jubilee Party Deputy Organising Secretary Pauline Njoroge has publicly thrown her weight behind Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the opposition figure best placed to galvanise young voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Njoroge argues that Sifuna must be part of the coalition’s top leadership despite the presence of other heavyweight contenders.

Speaking during an interview with political analyst Herman Manyora that aired on his YouTube channel on Friday, July 10, Njoroge said the opposition currently has four key leaders, Fred Matiang’i, Kalonzo Musyoka, Edwin Sifuna and Rigathi Gachagua, but insisted that the time had come for a younger generation of leaders to take centre stage.

“The opposition has four key leaders. Fred Matiang’i, Kalonzo Musyoka, Edwin Sifuna and Rigathi Gachagua. I am with the four of them, but a moment has come for our generation to also lead,” Njoroge said.

She said the 2024 Gen Z protests fundamentally changed Kenya’s political landscape by awakening a generation that had previously felt excluded from national leadership.

“For the longest time, we have been told that we are the leaders of tomorrow, but the Gen Z protests in 2024 opened our eyes, and we were forced into a reset as a country, and we started seeing things differently,” she said.

According to Njoroge, the opposition must present a leadership team that resonates with younger voters if it hopes to unseat President William Ruto in 2027.

“In 2027, something different must happen. These young people must have someone they believe represents them on that table,” she said.

Njoroge argued that many young Kenyans stayed away from the ballot in the 2022 General Election because they did not feel represented by the candidates on offer.

“In 2022, eight million people did not come out to vote, because they did not see a reason,” she pointed out.

She maintained that bringing back those voters would require giving them a leader they could identify with.

“So, in 2027, we must give those people a reason to come out and vote, and we would like them to vote for us, the opposition. And for that reason, Edwin Sifuna must be on that table. I think that is non-negotiable,” Njoroge maintained.

Njoroge added that her support for the Linda Mwananchi movement is largely informed by Sifuna’s growing appeal among younger Kenyans.

“That is why for me, I am in Linda Mwananchi, and I am supporting him because he is the person who is taking charge and who the young generations are looking up to,” she said.

Remarks likely to raise eyebrows in Jubilee

Njoroge’s endorsement is politically significant because she is a senior Jubilee Party official, yet the party has already endorsed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as its preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Her remarks are therefore likely to fuel debate over whether influential figures within Jubilee are increasingly aligning themselves with Sifuna’s growing political movement even as the party continues to market Matiang’i as its flagbearer.

The issue has become more pronounced in recent months as several politicians associated with Matiang’i, including Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, have simultaneously participated in Linda Mwananchi activities, prompting questions about the eventual shape of the opposition coalition.

Sifuna’s profile continues to grow

Sifuna has recently emerged as one of the most prominent figures within the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has organised political tours and public rallies in counties including Machakos, Kitengela, Kakamega, Kisii and Nyamira.

The movement has attracted leaders from different political parties, among them former Chief Justice David Maraga, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi, Pauline Njoroge, Majimbo Kalasinga and Joshua Kimilu.

Sifuna has also hinted that Linda Mwananchi intends to unveil its political direction and leadership plans ahead of the 2027 General Election, while maintaining that the movement will not be used to divide the broader opposition.

Opposition negotiations intensify

Njoroge’s remarks come at a time when opposition leaders are engaged in consultations aimed at building a united front against President William Ruto.

Among the names that have consistently featured in discussions over the coalition’s presidential ticket are Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Jubilee’s Fred Matiang’i, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, PLP’s Martha Karua and Sifuna, whose influence has grown through the Linda Mwananchi movement.

The coalition negotiations will ultimately determine whether the various opposition formations rally behind a single presidential candidate or agree on a broader power-sharing arrangement before the 2027 polls.

While Njoroge did not explicitly state that Sifuna should be the opposition’s presidential flagbearer, she made it clear that, in her view, any serious coalition seeking to mobilise younger voters cannot afford to exclude him from its highest decision-making table.
