Former nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has launched a scathing attack on Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, questioning the secrecy and legality surrounding the declaration of her seat as vacant.

In a Facebook post published on Thursday, May 22, 2025, Orwoba demanded answers over the letter that reportedly authorized Kingi to make the announcement yet remains unseen by the public and, according to her, was never shared with her personally.

Undisclosed letter

“Who is the CEO of the Registrar of Political Parties that wrote a letter to Speaker Amason Kingi clearing the Senate to announce my seat vacant?” she posed.

She went further, questioning the dual roles of Anne Nderitu, who serves as the Registrar of Political Parties and is also among the nominees for the reconstituted Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

“Was she writing as CEO of the Registrar of Political Parties and then receiving the same communication as an IEBC commissioner to act on it?” Orwoba asked.

Kingi made the declaration on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, through a Gazette Notice, citing Article 101(2) of the Constitution, which provides for the vacancy of a Senate seat held by a nominated member under Article 98(1)(b).

UDA expulsion fallout

Orwoba’s removal follows her expulsion from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party on Monday, May 19, 2025, over alleged misconduct and disloyalty. Her participation in opposition-aligned activities and sharp public criticism of government policies triggered disciplinary action from the ruling party.

The UDA National Executive Committee ratified the expulsion, stating that her actions violated the party’s Code of Conduct and undermined its unity and leadership.

IEBC credibility concerns

Orwoba also cast doubt on the credibility of the team expected to manage the 2027 General Election.

“These are the same nominees who will be cleared by Parliament in a few days to conduct the 2027 presidential elections?” she wrote.

The ousted senator expressed concern over what she called institutional silence and lack of transparency. “Why hasn’t the same CEO of the Registrar of Political Parties sent me any communication? Why is only the Speaker of the Senate in possession of the letter?”

Concluding her post, she stated, “Accept and move on? I did kitambo sana. God sends messengers in every form. Remove me from the equation and take the information in this post seriously.”

The IEBC is expected to fill the Senate vacancy once fully constituted, but delays in appointments may affect the timeline.
