Orengo vows united front with State to tackle insecurity, illicit trade in Siaya
Siaya Governor James Orengo has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing insecurity and illicit trade in the county through stronger collaboration with the national government and local stakeholders.
Speaking during the 41st Jukwaa la Usalama Forum held in Siaya county on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Orengo revealed that he had hosted the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, in a meeting that brought together diverse actors in the county’s security and governance sectors.
“Today, I hosted CS for Interior and National Administration Kipchumba Murkomen in Siaya during the 41st Jukwaa la Usalama Forum,” Orengo stated, underscoring the importance of the engagement in tackling pressing challenges.

He pointed out that as a border county, Siaya faces unique and complex security issues that require a coordinated response. Among the most pressing, he noted, are contraband smuggling and the influx of illicit alcohol and drugs, which have long posed social and economic risks.
“As a border county, we face challenges ranging from contraband smuggling, illicit alcohol and drugs, to unregulated mining, SGBV, stock theft and hooliganism,” he said.
Orengo further highlighted the county’s determination to work hand in hand with both the national government and grassroots players in building a safer environment. He stressed that security and development cannot be separated, and that peace is a prerequisite for prosperity.
“We are committed to working with the National Government, local leadership, boda boda sector, students and security agencies to build a safer, more secure Siaya,” Orengo affirmed.

Orengo’s call to action emphasises collective responsibility, with boda boda operators, students, and community leaders seen as central to combating insecurity and curbing illicit trade. His assurance that county leadership remains committed to working closely with State agencies further positions Siaya as a key frontier in strengthening national security frameworks at the local level.
At the heart of his message was a reaffirmation that the county’s progress depends on ensuring safety and stability for its people, and that the government at both levels must remain united in achieving this goal.
