Siaya Governor James Orengo has called on Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders who received funds from President William Ruto to return the money, escalating internal party tensions.

Speaking during a public gathering on Sunday, April 26, 2026, Orengo said, “Kuna viongozi walipewa pesa na Ruto, mimi nataka kuambia warudishe hizo pesa kwa Ruto, sisi hatutaki pesa za Ruto.”

The remarks, come amid growing divisions within ODM over its political direction and engagement with the government. Orengo, addressing what he described as his first church gathering since becoming an active ODM leader, framed his position as part of a broader push to maintain the party’s independence.

“Tangu nimekuwa ODM leader, this is my first time attending a church gathering,” he said.

Warnings over rally security

Earlier, Orengo warned of possible disruptions ahead of the Linda Mwananchi rally at KaOwuor Grounds in Kisumu. In a statement, he said those behind plans to cause violence were known and urged them to stop.

“We are fully aware of those orchestrating violence and the interests they serve. Abandon your schemes; this movement is an unstoppable force. The voice of the people is the voice of God. Tupatane KaOwuor Grounds!” he said.

He added that the Linda Mwananchi movement would proceed with its activities despite previous incidents, including the April 8 attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi. The rally is expected to test the movement’s support in the region.

Internal ODM rivalry

Orengo’s remarks come amid an intensifying contest within ODM, where differing positions have emerged on cooperation with the government. In recent weeks, he has described himself as the “people’s party leader,” maintaining that the party should retain its independence.

He has also referenced historical movements to underscore internal resistance within political organisations.

During a Linda Mwananchi rally in Luanda, Vihiga County, Orengo received backing from leaders including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna. Osotsi also endorsed his leadership, stating, “James Orengo si anatosha kuwa rais?” Orengo responded by acknowledging the support and reaffirming his commitment to strengthening the party.

The developments highlight ongoing political realignments within ODM ahead of the 2027 elections. Leaders allied to the Linda Mwananchi faction, including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, have maintained opposition to any form of collaboration with the government, while others have expressed openness to engagement.
