Siaya Governor James Orengo has intensified his grassroots political engagement following a meeting with the Jonsaga Bunge La Wanainchi team, in what is being seen as part of early positioning ahead of the 2027 general election.

Taking to his official X account on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Orengo said that the meeting, led by Bunge La Wanainchi Chairperson Julius Ogonda, brought together community representatives and grassroots mobilisers focused on strengthening citizen participation in governance and national decision-making.

Orengo said the Bunge La Wanainchi movement plays a critical role in nation-building by ensuring that the voice of ordinary citizens remains central in political discourse.

“Great engagement today with the Jonsaga Bunge La Wanainchi team, led by Chairperson Julius Ogonda. Bunge La Wanainchi plays a critical role in nation building by keeping the grassroots voice alive and vibrant,” Orengo noted.

He added that his engagement with the movement reflects a broader effort to stay connected with public concerns across the country.

Orengo signalled growing political momentum, suggesting readiness for future leadership responsibilities.

“We aren’t just hearing you, we are preparing to lead. Together, we are charting a bold new path for 2027 that puts the citizen first,” he said.

Linda Mwananchi Movement involvement

Orengo, who described himself as the “team captain” of the Linda Mwananchi Movement, said the initiative is focused on listening to citizens’ grievances and shaping policy direction from the grassroots level.

He emphasised that the movement seeks to prioritise citizen welfare, accountability, and inclusive governance.

“As the team captain of Linda Mwananchi Movement, I am listening closely to the cries of our people,” Orengo wrote on X.

Early 2027 political positioning

Although Orengo did not explicitly declare any candidacy, his remarks come weeks after he received a surprise and highly public endorsement from leaders aligned to the Linda Mwananchi faction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), who declared him the party’s preferred leader during a rally in Vihiga County.

The endorsement was made on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at a charged political gathering in Luanda, where Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna openly backed Orengo for a senior leadership role within ODM, with some leaders going as far as referring to him as the party’s leader.

During the rally, Osotsi strongly endorsed Orengo, questioning the need for any alternative leadership figure within ODM and urging the party to rally behind him.

Osotsi also claimed that Orengo was ripe for the presidency.
