Opposition sets eyes on Western Kenya rally
With the 2027 General Election approaching, Kenya’s opposition alliance is intensifying efforts to consolidate into a unified United Alternative Government front aimed at presenting a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto.
Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has placed coalition-building at the centre of the strategy, emphasising unity and structured consultations among opposition figures.
In a post on X dated Tuesday, June 2, 2026, Wamalwa said: “Coalition building is a delicate process that requires commitment, patience, sacrifice and continuous consultations, cooperation, coordination and compromise. Western Kenya here We come from the weekend of 12th June 2026.”
The post, accompanied by an image of opposition leaders in discussion, comes ahead of a planned Western Kenya tour scheduled for the weekend of June 12, 2026.
The engagement was first announced during a funeral service in Navakholo, Kakamega County, on May 29, 2026, where Wamalwa called for mobilisation ahead of the regional rally.
“Even as we prepare to host the United Alternative Government team in Western Kenya in the coming weeks, we remain committed to uniting with all like-minded political leaders and outfits to front one presidential candidate who will face William Ruto on the ballot, defeat him decisively, and make him a WANTAM president,” he said.

Western Kenya emerges as key political battleground
Western Kenya has emerged as a central battleground, with opposition and government-aligned leaders actively seeking influence ahead of the 2027 vote.
George Natembeya has positioned himself as a regional voice cautioning against last-minute defections and urging residents to maintain political consistency. He has indicated that the region’s political direction will be outlined during the burial of the father of former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati in Kabuchai Constituency.
At the same time, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has continued to attract support from allies including Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga and Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, who have emphasised backing for aligned opposition leadership in the region.
Sifuna, together with Natembeya, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, has held several closed-door meetings focused on strategy, unity, and coordination within the opposition.
A notable meeting took place on April 21, 2026, at the DCP party headquarters in Lavington, where discussions centred on political unity, accountability, and leadership structures ahead of the election period.

Political tensions rise as rival camps position for influence
Wamalwa has also publicly expressed openness to supporting alternative leadership within the opposition. During a May 16, 2026 interview, he stated he would consider backing Sifuna’s presidential bid if circumstances favour it and outlined possible party-level arrangements within DAP-K.
The opposition’s internal discussions have coincided with rising political competition in Western Kenya, where leaders aligned to the government and opposition continue to mobilise support.
During a funeral in Navakholo, Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula challenged Wamalwa to declare his political ambitions, while Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe reaffirmed support for President Ruto and the broad-based government arrangement.
On the government side, leaders including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya have linked their support for the 2027 re-election bid of President William Ruto to calls for the allocation of the deputy president position to Western Kenya.
The planned June 12, 2026 tour is expected to bring together key opposition figures as coalition-building efforts continue to shape political alignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.
