Opposition postpones Western tour to honour departed Luhya Council of Elders chair
Eugene Wamalwa has announced the postponement of the United Alternative Government’s planned four-day political tour of Western Kenya following the death of Patrick Wangamati.
In a statement on Sunday, May 24, 2026, Wamalwa said the opposition-allied team had suspended the tour in honour of Wangamati, who is set to be buried on May 30, 2026, in Khachonge, Bungoma County.
“We have today postponed our United Alternative Government’s four-day tour of Western Kenya which was to commence on 29th May 2026,” Wamalwa said.
The former Defence Cabinet Secretary described Wangamati as a respected elder and influential leader within the Luhya community.
The postponed tour was expected to bring together leaders affiliated with the emerging United Alternative Government movement, which has recently intensified political mobilization campaigns across different regions of the country.
Wamalwa indicated that while the Western Kenya programme had been suspended, members of the Linda Mwananchi movement would instead head to Machakos County for political activities in the Eastern region.
The death of Wangamati is likely to resonate politically within Western Kenya, where councils of elders continue to wield cultural and political influence, particularly during periods of heightened political realignment.
Wangamati served as chairman of the Luhya Council of Elders, a body that has often played a role in mediation, community mobilization and political consultations within the larger Mulembe nation.
The postponement also comes at a time when opposition figures are increasing grassroots engagements ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Western Kenya emerging as a key battleground for both government and opposition camps.
