Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has come out stating that the sharp remarks made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua are an indication of how Kenya has become a failed state.

While speaking during an interview on Monday, May 25, 2026, with a local radio station, the outspoken former MP stated that in the past, when he used to hear Gachagua making remarks about shares—suggesting that those with more votes should receive more development than those with fewer votes or those who did not vote for the current regime—he used to be livid.

However, he said that he has now made peace with such statements and is no longer as irritated as he was before, viewing them as an illustration of how Kenya has deteriorated politically.

He continued expressing his frustrations with the current dispensation, saying that instead of the national cake being shared equally among Kenyans, each leader is busy fighting for their own portion.

“There were times when I used to be livid on what Gachagua used to talk about shares but these days as I listen to him talk about this story of of shares and everything.”

“I just interpret it to mean this is the dysfunctionality of our state that instead of everybody sharing the national cake and us building it so that the shares are equitable, we are busy talking about mm I’m here and I’m in here.”

Onyonka apologises to Gachagua

Onyonka was in the past a fierce critic of Rigathi Gachagua, but in recent times they have become allies. This even saw him apologise to the DCP leader for supporting his impeachment.

The outspoken senator, who had wholeheartedly called for the ouster of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader, said that he never knew him well at the time.

Reason for apology

Onyonka continued explaining that his decision to seek forgiveness from the DCP boss was influenced by his mother, who urged him to apologise to Gachagua for crucifying him.

“My mother told me to apologise to you because I impeached you. I didn’t know you were a good man. Now I know, and I am so sorry,” Onyonka said.
