ODM moves to strengthen roots in Northern Kenya ahead of 2027 polls

The Orange Democratic Party (ODM) has stepped up its operations in Northern Kenya, strengthening its presence there as the party prepares for the 2027 General Election.

Writing on X on Thursday, July 9, 2026, the ODM Party has noted that the party leader, Oburu Odinga, in that view, met officials of the former Northern Frontier District (NFD) on Wednesday, June 8, 2026, to deliberate on measures to broaden the party’s base and strengthen its structures in the region.

“As part of routine engagements with party officials from the various parts of the country, PL @DrOburu_O on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, met with officials from the Northern Frontier District (NFD) to discuss how to strengthen the party in the region and make it stronger as we head into the general election year,” ODM noted in a statement.

During the meeting, ODM noted that the party leader met the party’s officials from Isiolo, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties, while the party continued consultations with grassroots leaders from various counties in the country.

The party has further indicated that in their discussions, the leaders discussed strategies for building the party’s presence in the region and also for strengthening grassroots mobilisation in preparation for the next general elections.

The party said the officials reaffirmed their allegiance to ODM’s ideology and promised to protect the party’s identity while conducting a ‘bombay’ membership recruitment campaign in the five counties.

Focus on grassroots mobilisation

The engagement is part of ODM’s strategy to build its support in areas where it wants to grow its political influence before the 2027 election.

Party officials from the north had given assurances to the leadership that they would lead the recruitment of new members and also improve the party in the area to enable ODM to compete.

The talks are also expected to help the party prioritise the various regions as well as enhance coordination between the national leadership and county officials.

ODM has in recent months been engaging in such meetings with party officials in various parts of the country as it seeks to restructure its grassroots organisation and build itself up for the electoral season.

The party’s meeting with leaders of counties in the North Kenya region is a reminder of its quest to expand the party’s reach across the nation and strengthen its presence in areas that will be crucial during the 2027 general elections.
