Raila Odinga’s ODM party has commenced disciplinary proceedings against seven lawmakers who met President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi last week.

The party yesterday wrote show cause letters to the individual MPs and asked them to respond within three days failure to which, the matter will be referred to the party’s disciplinary committee.

The party’s national chairman John Mbadi told People Daily that he had acted on a complaint lodged by Migori Senator Eddy Oketch on why action should be taken against the MPs who visited the President on Tuesday last week.

“We have written a letter from the Office of the Chairman to the members to show cause why action should not be taken against them. This is the normal procedure,” said Mbadi.

The Nominated legislator explained that the decision on whether or not the cases will proceed to disciplinary hearings will depend on how the affected MPs explain themselves.

“If a member responds satisfactorily, then the case ends there. But if the response is not adequate then I will refer the matter to the Central Committee for further action which may include referring the matter to the disciplinary committee,” he said.

Mbadi further explained that should the responses not be satisfactory, the matter will proceed to Central Committee, and Disciplinary committee which will make a recommendation to the party’s National Executive Committee.

Mbadi stated that should the committee recommend the expulsion of a member, then such a move must be ratified by the National Governing Council (NGC).

According to Mbadi, the letters were dispatched to the members who have three days to respond to each allegation made against them. “I signed off the letters and left them for the Secretariat to dispatch them,” said Mbadi.

A source with ‘Chungwa House’ who requested anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media, confided in People Daily that the letters had been dispatched.
