Former Law Society of Kenya president Nelson Havi has recounted how Lamu Woman Representative Muthoni Marubu was rescued after triggering chaos at the funeral of Embakasi North MP James Gakuya’s father in Murang’a County.

In a statement shared on his social media platforms on Sunday, January 4, 2025, Havi said he was present at the burial when the incident occurred. According to him, the funeral had been calm until the Lamu Woman Representative began chanting a political slogan associated with the two-term narrative, an act that immediately angered mourners.

Havi explained that the chant was poorly timed and insensitive, given the sombre nature of the event. The crowd reacted angrily and moved towards the legislator, forcing security officers to step in to prevent the situation from escalating.

Security personnel swiftly intervened and escorted the woman representative away from the funeral grounds before taking her to a secure location for her safety. Havi noted that the quick response by security prevented what could have turned into a serious confrontation.

He criticised the legislator’s conduct, terming it reckless and a clear demonstration of poor judgment, especially at a funeral where emotions were already high and opposed to the narrative. According to Havi, political slogans have no place in such settings and only serve to inflame unnecessary tensions.

“I was present in Murang’a County when Lamu Woman Representative Muthoni Marubu, with a profound lack of emotional intelligence, started chanting ‘Two Terms’ in an otherwise calm funeral. The crowd charged at her. The security intervened and took her away to a safe house. What she did was stupid!”

Muranga chaos

This comes a day after the woman Mp caused chaos at the already charged funeral that was dominated by political leaders aligned to the opposition and opposed to the tutam narrative

Marubu began her address with condolences. She thanked a previous speaker, Munyoro, and spoke directly to the Gakuya family.

“Kwa familia ya rafiki yangu Bazenga, kwanza nasema pole kwa kupoteza mama,” she said. “Najua mama ni kitengo muhimu sana katika familia. Langu ni kuwaomba tafadhali wewe na ndugu zako muendelee kushirikiana.”

She then introduced herself, stating she is the Woman Representative for Lamu County and is known as Muthoni.

“Originally my parents are from here, Murang’a, Maragua.” She praised the local infrastructure, noting the smooth roads and electricity supply, contrasting it with challenges in Lamu.

“Mimi nimefurahishwa na stima mko nayo hapa. Nyinyi watu wa Mt Kenya West, nimekuja kurealize nyinyi Wakikuyu wa Mt Kenya West, mungu anajua sisi Wakikuyu wa diaspora hatufanani. Shida zetu sio kama shida zenu. Ingawa wazazi wetu walitoka huku, nyinyi mnaonekana mshafika Singapore,” she said.
