Former Attorney-General and Democratic Party (DP) Party leader Justin Muturi has called on Kenyans to remain vigilant as he highlighted what he described as growing threats to the country’s constitutional order.

He spoke during the Democratic Party of Kenya National Delegates Convention at Ufungamano House on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, describing the gathering as a defining moment for the party. Muturi said the Democratic Party has consistently played a frontline role in Kenya’s democratic journey, tracing its roots to the struggle against authoritarianism.

“Today at Ufungamano House, the Democratic Party of Kenya held its National Delegates Convention, a defining moment for a party that has consistently stood on the frontlines of Kenya’s democratic journey,” Muturi said.

He explained that the party was founded on the principles of justice, accountability, and people-centred leadership, and has remained committed to ensuring power serves the people rather than dominating them.

“The Democratic Party was born in resistance to authoritarianism and built on the ideals of justice, accountability, and people-centred leadership. From the struggle for multi-party democracy to the shaping of constitutional governance, the Party has remained anchored in the belief that power must serve the people, never dominate them,” he said.

Muturi emphasised that the party’s participation in the United Opposition is driven by the current challenges Kenyans face, including rising living costs, growing debt, and weakening institutions.

“The decision to be part of the United Opposition is grounded in conviction. Kenyans are facing an unbearable cost of living, rising public debt, shrinking opportunities, and a growing disregard for constitutional order. In such moments, silence and political convenience are not options. Unity is a patriotic responsibility,” he said.

Speaking from his experience in public service, Muturi warned of executive overreach and the weakening of independent institutions, noting that Kenya’s Constitution is under strain.

“Speaking from experience as a former Attorney-General, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Cabinet Secretary, it is impossible to ignore the danger signs. The Constitution is under strain. Independent institutions are being weakened. Executive overreach is becoming normalised. This is not the Kenya envisioned in 2010,” he said.

Muturi concluded by urging for leadership that respects institutions and the rule of law, while reaffirming the Democratic Party’s commitment to national service.

“The country needs leadership anchored in the rule of law, respect for institutions, and service to the people, not personal ambition or political expediency,” he said.

“The Democratic Party stands ready. The United Opposition remains firm. And Kenya, though wounded, will rise again,” he concluded.
