Muturi demands immediate gazettement of polling stations by IEBC

Former Attorney General Justin Muturi has called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to immediately gazette all polling stations across the country and convene a national stakeholders’ conference, warning that delays are undermining public confidence in the electoral process.

In a statement on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Muturi accused the electoral commission of failing to uphold transparency standards expected of an institution tasked with overseeing credible elections.

“The continued failure by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to gazette all polling stations is unacceptable and deeply troubling,” Muturi said.

He argued that at a time when trust in electoral institutions needs to be strengthened, any delay in publishing the list of polling stations creates suspicion and raises questions about the integrity of election preparations.

The former National Assembly Speaker noted that public primary schools have traditionally served as polling stations but said recent concerns about the existence of questionable or unverified schools have heightened the need for transparency.

According to Muturi, the publication of all polling stations would allow citizens, political parties, civil society groups, faith-based organizations, election observers and the media to independently verify the locations and identify any irregularities well before polling day.

“The gazettement of polling stations is not a favour to citizens. It is a fundamental requirement for electoral transparency,” he said.

Muturi also criticised the commission for failing to convene a national stakeholders’ conference despite what he described as growing calls for engagement from various sectors of society.

He said key stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organisations, faith-based groups, professional bodies, the media, the diplomatic community, development partners and Kenya’s Gen Z population, had all expressed interest in structured engagement with the commission.

“The Commission cannot claim to be preparing for credible elections while simultaneously avoiding the very stakeholders whose confidence it seeks to secure,” Muturi stated.

He added that a stakeholders’ conference would provide an important platform for concerns to be addressed, questions answered and confidence-building measures agreed upon before the country enters another election cycle.

Describing such a forum as an “urgent democratic necessity,” Muturi warned that every day without stakeholder engagement and full disclosure of polling stations further erodes public trust in the electoral process.

“Transparency delayed is transparency denied,” he said.

The former Attorney General further argued that the credibility of future elections would be determined not only by what happens on election day but also by the transparency and accountability demonstrated during preparations.

He urged the IEBC to act without delay, insisting that the time for explanations had passed.

“We therefore demand the immediate gazettement of all polling stations and the urgent convening of a national stakeholders’ conference. The time for excuses has passed. The time for transparency is now,” Muturi said.

The statement comes as the reconstituted IEBC begins preparations for upcoming electoral activities amid heightened public interest in reforms aimed at strengthening confidence in Kenya’s electoral management systems.
