The selection and appointment committee in Murang’a County Assembly has vetted Newton Mwangi for the position of County Secretary.

Mwangi was appointed by Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata and if approved he will be taking over from Benard Wanyoike who has been holding the position in an acting capacity for the last six months.

Wanyoike took over the role from Patrick Mukuria who served in the administration of former governor Mwangi Wa Iria.

The committee headed by assembly speaker Joseph Mukuha sought to know if Mwangi was picked for the position due to his close ties with Kang’ata.

He, however, said he applied for the job alongside other candidates, was shortlisted and finally selected as the best candidate.

The 62-year-old holds a master’s degree in Philosophy in Education, Masters in Education, and a bachelor’s degree in Education among other qualifications.

Mwangi is currently the chairperson Board of Directors at MTN Sacco ltd, a matatu Sacco in Murang’a.

He is also the chairman of Murang’a South and Nyandarua Central Secondary Schools Heads Associations and has been a principal in three secondary schools in Murang’a.

He said he has over 36 years of experience in various sectors and this will enable him to handle the county affairs effectively.

“I applied for the job and I believe my qualifications gave me an upper hand over the other candidates thus it was not a favour,” he said.

“I have headed various organizations and I got the managerial experience which will help me in my work,” he added.

Among the issues he said he would focus on are increasing revenue collection, looking into the welfare of the workers and ensuring there will be no delays in payment.
