Tetu Member of Parliament (MP) Geoffrey Wandeto has claimed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s identity has historically been inseparable from its former leader, Raila Odinga.

Reflecting on the party’s journey since its inception, Wandeto suggested that recent internal developments confirm a long-held belief by the former party leader.

Speaking during a morning talk show with a local station on Monday, March 30, 2026, Wandeto argued that the party’s identity has historically been inseparable from its founder, a factor that now complicates its transition.

“ODM was Raila Odinga, and Raila was ODM, the party’s true north,” Wandeto stated. “There is a struggle for the party’s core values. One faction represents continuity, family ties led by Oburu Odinga, while the other is pushing for change.”

Total renewal of ODM

The lawmaker said the Sifuna faction is reportedly pushing for a total renewal of the party.

Wandeto noted that this younger wing appears to carry the “DNA of ODM” by upholding the reformist spirit Raila Odinga was once known for, specifically the willingness to call things wrong when they are mistaken.

“Baba was known for being the official custodian of democracy and constitutionalism in this country. And the Sifuna faction, as you can see, seems to want to carry on with that DNA of calling things wrong when they are wrong. The other coalition seems to be a little more keen on power and what they can get from the broad-based coalition,” Wandeto said.

A house divided

Wandeto’s comments come amidst escalating friction within the Orange Party, which appears split between a coalition wing and a younger wing.

Wandeto identified the divide as one between the established guard often associated with the Odinga family lineage and a rising group of leaders eager to steer the party in a new direction.

Wandeto claimed that Edwin Sifuna has become a focal point for the party’s younger base.

“The Sifuna arm is one to watch, first of all because I think it’s carrying the young people’s vote and I think it is the one that really has the DNA of ODM when you look at it closely,” Wandeto noted.
