Moses Kuria vows to back Gachagua if he makes to the ballot
By Emmanuel Rono, May 20, 2026Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has challenged former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, telling him that he will give him support in the 2027 election if he successfully secures a place on the presidential ballot.
In a brief statement posted on his X on May 20, 2026, Moses Kuria declared his challenge to Gachagua amid the ongoing court case over his impeachment.
“I will vote for Riggy G if he proves me wrong and ends up on the ballot. Challenge given,” Moses Kuria said.
The comment comes amid growing political realignments and speculation over Gachagua’s political future following his fallout with sections of the Kenya Kwanza administration that led to his impeachment in 2024.
Gachagua’s presidential bid announcement
Recently, Gachagua revealed that the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has encouraged him to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election, signalling growing political momentum around his expected bid.
Speaking on Sunday, May 3, 2026, during a church service in Kajiado, Gachagua sought to calm speculation over divisions in the opposition, saying Kenyans should not be worried about his presidential ambitions.
He insisted that his political aspirations would not fracture the opposition, adding that leaders in the coalition were working toward unity ahead of the next polls.
“Wanachama wa DCP wamenihimiza kuwania urais mwaka wa 2027, na niko tayari kwa hilo. Hata hivyo, nataka kuwahakikishia Wakenya kuwa azma yangu haitagawanya upinzani, sisi ni wengi na tutaendelea kushirikiana,” Gachagua stated.
Gachagua’s case proceedings
On April 27, 2026 the first session was held in which Gachagua maintained that the impeachment exercise by Parliament in October 2024 failed to meet the public participation threshold as demanded by the constitution and was irregular and unconstitutional.
Senior Counsel Paul Muite, who heads Gachuga’s legal team, argued to the court that the former Deputy President should be compensated for remuneration, damages and loss associated with the “unlawful and procedurally tainted removal from office”.
The court was told that the petitioner had forfeited the prayers seeking reinstatement as deputy president.
“The petitioner has abandoned the prayer for reinstatement as Deputy President,” Muite told the court.
