Former Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Moses Kuria has recalled the days when the Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua was serving as the deputy president, saying that he misses those moments because Gachagua always listened.

Speaking in a morning interview at a local TV station on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, Kuria noted that the strength of the Mount Kenya region was reduced when Gachagua was impeached.

“Let us not look at those in government right now because deep down, there is a big problem. Rigathi played a major role as deputy president. I miss the moments with him as deputy president. Our strength as a region was reduced when Gachagua was impeached,” Kuria argued.

The former lawmaker for Gatundu South Constituency has also noted that Rigathi was a strong Deputy President to William Ruto. Kuria has noted that there are things that the president would have wanted to do but could not do because Riathi Gachagua was there at the time to protect the interests of the Mount Kenya people.

Moses has also noted that Rigathi Gachagua always put the interests of the Mount Kenya people first, and could always engage other leaders on matters of governance and the development plans the government had concerning the Mount Kenya region, including the reforms in the coffee sector.

Kuria’s sentiments have come at a time when different political factions are realigning in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

With a possible merger between the ODM Party led by Siaya senator Oburu Odinga and the ruling party UDA, the possibility of the Deputy President position remaining in Mount Kenya is at stake, with the Oburu-led ODM faction sparking a debate on being interested in the Deputy President’s position as talks for the merger between the two sides continue.

The statement from the ODM party has, however, received opposition from Mount Kenya leaders who support the current Deputy President, Kithure Kindiki wha has said that the position of deputy president belongs to him and is not vacant in the run-up to the general elections.
