Morara: Campaign financing will be United Opposition’s main challenge ahead of 2027
By Mabonga Makhanu, January 25, 2026Civil activist and educator Morara Kebaso has stated that the main hurdle the United Opposition will face is campaign financing.
While speaking during an interview on Ijo Nini on Sunday, January 25, 2026, the activist, who at one time joined the opposition but later ditched them, said the United Opposition is facing serious financial challenges necessary to set up a campaign machinery that would enable them to send President William Ruto home, as they wish.

He went on to state that the only person with an advantage within the opposition formation is Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, who, according to him, may have the financial muscle to traverse the country and also enjoys the support of his region, which is able to bankroll his presidential quest.
He further stated that the rest of the principals have no such advantage and are instead relying on figures such as retired President Uhuru Kenyatta for support.
“The other thing in united opposition is money; there is a big problem when it comes to campaign financing. The only person who seems to have money in the United Opposition is Gachagua, also courtesy of the community where he comes from,” Morara stated.
Morara continued to argue that the contest will be tough since the President, who is their main opponent, has huge political muscle compared to the United Opposition, making him more advantaged. According to Morara, the Kenyan electorate is highly materialistic and often bends towards candidates with stronger financial backing.
Manyora’s view

This comes days after political analyst Herman Manyora stated that for one to win the 2027 presidential seat, one must have good financial resources and not anything less than Ksh10 billion.
He stated that it’s only former chief justice and presidential hopeful David Maraga who is capable of winning the race without money.
“I want to tell the opposition, Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Natembeya, unless you are Maraga, because Maraga has come out on a platform of people doing the campaign, so money is not important, but for the other ones, money is important, and it will be big money,” Manyora states.
“But the problem is not money; they can have money. Gachagua can raise money; the problem, and I have said it before, is the capacity to spend that money.”
