Nyandarua Senator John Methu has revealed that there was a plot to assassinate him ahead of the Ol Kalou by-election in an attempt to force the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to postpone the poll.

Speaking in an interview with Kameme TV on Monday, July 20, 2026, Methu said that he had received intelligence warning him of the plan, which he believes was intended to create a security crisis significant enough to derail the electoral process.

“I was tipped that there was a plot to kill me so that the IEBC could be forced to postpone the by-elections,” Methu said.

Despite the threats to his life, Methu has observed that he remained determined to continue campaigning and engaging with residents, crediting the people of Ol Kalou for giving him the confidence to press on.

“The people of Ol Kalou have made me a respectable person and have encouraged me to be brave,” he said.

Methu defends uniformed police

The outspoken Senator has defended Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja over the violence witnessed during the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, arguing that the police leadership had made adequate security arrangements but was undermined by what he described as the deployment of political goons.

According to the senator, the violence was not a result of police failure but of interference by individuals organised outside the police command structure.

“The IG as a person was willing to protect the Ol Kalou by-election because all the uniformed officers were willing and had the orders to protect the elections. The problem is that the Inspector General organised 1,000 police officers, and his superior, who is the Interior Minister, organised goons. When the goons arrived at the voting centres, they fought both the voters and the uniformed officers,” Methu said.
