Meru women professionals urge Senate to uphold Governor Mwangaza’s impeachment
A section of women in Meru has endorsed the impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza and urged the Senate to vote to remove the county boss from office.
Addressing members of the press on Tuesday, December 20, the group of women professionals said the Members of the Meru County Assembly were justified to impeach the governor over gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The group of women drawn from various professions both in political and civic spaces questioned the governor’s managerial skills, saying she poses a threat to county operations.
“This incompetence is evidenced by the sour working between the Governor and other institutions and arms within the Meru County Government namely the Meru County Public Service Board and the Meru County Assembly,” the group said.
The women claimed that the county chief had internationally frustrated the public participation process that aims at outlining the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) which is vital in outlining the County’s priority service delivery and development plan.
Further, the women poked holes in the appointment of the governor’s husband Murega Baichu as the patron of the Meru Youth Service, insisting that the appointment was illegal.
“Governor Mwangaza stands indicted by the Meru County Assembly for violating the law, especially on creating appointive positions and recruiting county officials,” they said.
“The position of Patron is not provided for in the Meru Youth Service Act which is enabling legislation. Further, the Governor did not consult the Assembly when nor direct it to amend ye legislation to create this position.”
The group also accused the governor of irregularly appointing the County Secretary, saying the recruitment was not done competitively.
“The governor continues to conduct operations at the Meru County Government in brazen impunity, singularly and disdainfully,” they added.
The women also faulted the governor over what they termed as indecent public demeanour eroding public confidence in her integrity. They said the governor has severally degenerated into public spats and scoffing at MCAs by using offensive words in the native Meru language “which could be translated to mean dogs.”
While dismissing claims that the governor is targeted because she is a woman, the group said the relationship between Mwangaza and other institutions in the county is irretrievably broken and impeachment of the county boss was the only option.
“It is our concluded opinion that Meru County deserves quality and competent leadership for developmental progress. We, therefore, appeal to the Senate to vote to impeach Governor Kawira Mwangaza, to set pace for progressive leadership,” they added.
“If the Senate does not convict her, it condemns the County to perpetual conflict and stagnation.”
67 MCAs voted on Wednesday, December 14 to impeach the governor.
Abogeta West MCA and Minority Whip Dennis Kiogora accused the governor of nepotism, illegal appointments, unlawful dismissals, usurpation of constitutional and statutory functions, incitement, bullying, vilification and misleading campaigns against other leaders.
The embattled county boss was also accused of forced entry into the Meru County Assembly and mobilising unlawful riots against the ward representatives, violation of public finance management laws and misconduct relating to the nomination of CECs.
The Senate is set to sit on Tuesday to consider the motion to remove the governor from office by way of impeachment.
