Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has signalled fresh energy and renewed momentum within the United Opposition after convening a high-level strategy meeting with key political leaders drawn from several parties.

The closed-door session, he said, was part of ongoing efforts to rebuild cohesion, sharpen collective purpose, and strengthen the coalition’s voice as it prepares to play a more assertive role on the national stage.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, December 11, 2025, Matiang’i said the talks brought together senior figures championing the formation of a stronger, coordinated Opposition bloc ahead of the next political cycle.

In his post, Matiang’i revealed that the discussions involved several party leaders, among them Martha Karua of the People Liberation Party (PLP), former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, Party of National Unity (PNU) leader, ex-Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani, United Party of Independent Alliance (UPIA), Lenny Kivuti (DEP), and James Magara (PDP). United Opposition Spokesperson Mukhisa Kituyi was also present.

“I had the pleasure of holding consultations with my colleagues in the United Opposition Party Leaders, Martha Karua (PLP), Peter Munya (PNU), Ukur Yatani (UPIA), Lenny Kivuti (DEP) and James Magara (PDP). We were also joined by the United Opposition Spokesperson Mukhisa Kituyi,” Matiang’i wrote.

He added that the meeting focused on strengthening the coalition’s organisational structure and sharpening its overall strategy, as leaders work to position the group as the country’s primary watchdog over government actions.

He noted that these discussions were aimed at ensuring the coalition remains organised, responsive, and firmly grounded in its oversight role.

“Our deliberations focused on the modalities of strengthening the Opposition in line with our steadfast mission to restore good leadership in our country,” he said.

The renewed engagements show an effort to consolidate various political factions that have been voicing concerns over governance, public finance management and leadership failures in recent months.
