Matiang’i meets former CJ Maraga as opposition pushes for unity amid 2027 political realignments

By , June 19, 2026

Jubilee Party deputy leader and former interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i has signalled renewed efforts to consolidate opposition forces. This comes after meeting Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga on what he termed ‘building a broad, united front committed to a better future for all Kenyans’.

In a statement shared on his X handle after the meeting on Friday, June 19, 2026, Matiang’i has framed the engagement as part of ongoing efforts to enhance opposition unity, saying that the united opposition seeks to liberate Kenya.

“Enhancing opposition unity as we seek to liberate Kenya. It was a pleasure catching up with Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga as we continue building a broad, united front committed to a better future for all Kenyans,” Matiang’i stated.

Maraga, who served as Kenya’s Chief Justice between 2016 and 2021, has in recent years maintained a public posture often associated with constitutionalism and governance accountability. His engagement with political actors continues to draw attention, given his stature in the judiciary and his influence in national discourse even after retirement.

Matiang’i, on the other hand, remains a key figure in opposition circles, frequently mentioned among leaders expected to play a central role in any major political coalition seeking to challenge the current administration.

Political realignment has been ongoing with increased emphasis on the formation of a common front to challenge President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election, with the former interior cabinet secretary, Fred Matiang’i, being one of the key players at the heart of the new alignment, reportedly seeking to remove the president.

The meeting with Maraga follows a few days after Matiang’i also met with a group of leaders that belong to the political formation of Linda Mwananchi, led by Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

The back-to-back negotiations have fuelled speculations about potential ties between the leaders and a political coalition in the run-up to 2027 to unseat the current government, although no one has officially said that they are forming a coalition.
