The candidates for the Malava and Banisa constituencies of Member of Parliament (MP) seats have joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s newly formed party, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

In a statement on Thursday, July 17, 2025, DCP Party interim deputy leader Cleophas Malala stated that Aden Mohammed and Edgar Busiega had ditched their respective parties.

“This afternoon, my party reaped big after two formidable candidates, Hon. Aden Mohammed, Banisa, and Edgar Busiega, Malava Constituency, ditched their parties to join the winning team. The two candidates, who are frontrunners in their respective constituencies, were received at the party headquarters,” read the statement.

The two constituencies are among the six set for by-elections and one senatorial post that have fallen vacant since 2023.

Gachagua launched the party on May 15, 2025, which is anchored on the slogan ‘Skiza Wakenya’ and marks his return to the political scene just weeks after his dramatic exit from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony held in Lavington, Nairobi, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, Gachagua described the party as a home for all Kenyans who feel unheard under the current administration. He emphasised that DCP will prioritise inclusive leadership rooted in public feedback.

“I made a promise to unveil a new political party in May 2025. As you all know, I am a truthful man who keeps his word. Today, that promise is fulfilled,” said Gachagua.

The party’s symbol is a listening ear, while its colours are neon green, brown, and white. According to Gachagua, the symbolism underscores the party’s core principle of actively engaging with the public in decision-making.

Gachagua took a direct jibe at President William Ruto, accusing him of abandoning the people who propelled him to power and instead surrounding himself with sycophants.

“I detest lies, and that is why I disagreed with the liar number one,” he stated, without naming the president directly.

He said ‘Skiza Wakenya‘ was conceived as a direct response to what he described as growing public frustration over unmet promises and a government that no longer listens.

“Our slogan is Skiza Wakenya—but if Kenyans wish, they can call it Skiza Ground. Either way, the message is clear: leaders must listen,” he said.

Gachagua emphasised that DCP will be a platform for every Kenyan, regardless of social class or political history.

“This party belongs to all of us, where every Kenyan is treated equally,” he said, adding, “At no time under our leadership will any citizen feel ignored or left behind.”
