Makau Mutua: Ruto would win if elections were held today
By Francis Muli, June 29, 2026Constitutional law scholar Prof. Makau Mutua has declared that President William Ruto would win re-election if a general election were held today, citing what he described as the president’s strong performance in office and the absence of a formidable challenger.
Speaking during a televised interview on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Mutua said Ruto’s development record had earned him the confidence of many Kenyans.
“If elections were held today, the president would win. He has worked. Kenyans are not fools. Kenyans can see that the president has worked and is working,” Mutua said.
He argued that the president currently faces no credible political rival.
“This president does not really have an opponent. He has a cast of characters who cannot give themselves a good birth,” he added.
Mutua, who has previously been an outspoken critic of Ruto, said his views changed after working closely with the head of state for more than a year.
“I was a critic of the President; I have worked with him for more than a year. I am impressed by his patriotism; I am impressed by his brilliance,” he said.
The law professor praised the president’s leadership, describing him as knowledgeable, hardworking and committed to national development.
“He has a breadth of knowledge and a good mind that impresses me very much. I have not seen a president of this country who has done as much as he has done in only three and a half years. I am truly impressed, and that is why I support him, and I think that is why ODM will support him. I have never seen a president who works as hard,” he said.
The remarks come amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election, with political leaders positioning themselves and seeking alliances as campaigns gradually gather momentum.
