Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru backs Kalonzo’s 2027 presidential bid
By Kenneth Mwenda, July 26, 2026Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has thrown his weight behind Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s 2027 presidential bid, saying Kenya needs a leader with a legal background to restore respect for the Constitution, the rule of law and public institutions.
Speaking on Sunday, July 26, 2026, during a worship service at Tseikuru Faith Baptist Presbyterian Church in Kitui County, Njiru argued that Kenya’s current problems stem from failure to uphold the law rather than a lack of economic or technical expertise.
Addressing congregants, the advocate compared the academic backgrounds of Kenya’s past presidents before making a political case for Kalonzo, who is a senior counsel.
“Moi alikuwa mwalimu. Kibaki alikuwa economist. Uhuru alikuwa economist. Tukakuja tukachagua jamaa wa matawi. Huyu bwana ni botanist,” Njiru said.
He then claimed that the country now requires a leader trained in law.
“Lakini sasa, tunataka kuangalia kiongozi ambaye ana elimu katika sector ya sheria. Kwa sababu ile kitu ambacho imeharibu hii nchi ni ukosefu wa kutii sheria na katiba yetu,” he said.
Njiru said this was the reason he and like-minded leaders were backing Kalonzo to succeed President William Ruto.
“That is why we are fronting the Senior Counsel as the next President of the Republic of Kenya,” he said.
Rule of law at the centre
Njiru said a Kalonzo presidency would focus on rebuilding constitutionalism and strengthening institutions that enforce the law.
According to him, Kenya needs what he described as a “new republic”, built on respect for the Constitution, protection of human rights and accountable leadership.
“This senior counsel is the one who is able to restore the rule of law and constitutionalism in this country. He is able to give us what we are calling the new republic,” Njiru said.
He added that the vision of the new republic would prioritise respect for the Constitution, human rights and public institutions.
“The new republic will envisage respect for the rule of law and constitutionalism, respect for human rights, restoration of hope for our people and restoration of our institutions,” he said.
Njiru also said the proposed reforms would include stronger protection of private property, renewed efforts to fight corruption and greater public participation in governance.
“The new republic will entail the restoration of fighting against corruption. It will entail the inclusivity of everybody, be it in policy formulation or policy implementation,” he said.
Njiru’s remarks add to the growing list of opposition leaders publicly backing Kalonzo ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The Wiper leader has increasingly positioned himself as a leading contender within the opposition coalition, with several allies describing him as a candidate capable of uniting the country.
Earlier this month, former Attorney General and Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi declared that he would support Kalonzo if he failed to secure the opposition’s presidential ticket.
Speaking during a church service on July 5, Muturi said he was prepared to rally behind Kalonzo in the interest of opposition unity.
In response, Kalonzo welcomed the endorsement but maintained that he would also support another opposition candidate if he was not chosen as the coalition’s flag bearer.
Speaking during a church service in Kitui County on July 12, Kalonzo urged his supporters not to criticise Muturi for expressing his political preference.
“People expected me to actually caution him. But that is JB Muturi,” Kalonzo said.
“Mimi kwa binafsi nitasema, kama sio mimi, mimi nitasupport yule mwingine yoyote yeye. And one of them is JB Muturi.”
