Kuria scoffs at Kalonzo over 2027 polls, claims no election will take place
By Aloys Michael, June 30, 2025The Senior Presidential Advisor Moses Kuria has dismissed Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s criticism of his recent claims that Kenya will not hold a general election in 2027, citing legal and institutional hurdles that may prevent the polls from taking place.
Speaking on Monday, June 30, 2025, following Kalonzo’s remarks on Kameme FM, Kuria doubled down on his assertion that the next elections are unlikely to proceed, blaming the legal standoff surrounding the appointment of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners.
“This morning I listened to my friend Kalonzo Musyoka on Kameme FM. SKM questioned my statement that there will be no election in 2027,” Kuria said.
“The swearing-in of IEBC Commissioners has been stopped by the court. In another 39 days, we will start the 24-month countdown to the 2027 elections.”
Kuria referred to recommendations by the Kriegler Commission, which investigated the disputed 2007 election, warning that any significant delay in reconstituting the IEBC undermines the possibility of a credible election.
“Kriegler told us that there cannot be a free and fair election if we don’t have a Commission two years before the election,” he noted.

The former Cabinet Secretary argued that given Kenya’s history of prolonged litigation, the court battle on IEBC appointments could extend well beyond the election timeline.
“Going by our litigious nature, this case will go all the way to the Supreme Court. It may go on till September 2027,” Kuria claimed.
He went further to suggest that in the absence of an election, the current administration would remain in office by default.
“So the current administration will continue being in office in the absence of an election,” he added.
In a sharp jab at Kalonzo, Kuria mocked the Wiper leader’s legal background while accusing him of dishonesty.
“I am not a Senior Counsel. I am not a lawyer. Kalonzo Musyoka is. He knows there is not going to be an election in 2027. The only difference is that I am honest and he is not,” Kuria stated.

Political betrayal?
Meanwhile, Kalonzo has accused ODM leader Raila Odinga of betrayal, saying he cannot work with President William Ruto or rejoin Raila politically.
He said he had stood by Raila in three successive general elections, only to be sidelined when the ODM leader opted to cooperate with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“Raila should ask himself if he betrayed the Azimio coalition or not,” Kalonzo said, adding that Raila’s move fractured the opposition and left many of its leaders politically exposed.
Kalonzo said Raila’s decision to engage with Ruto was made without consultation and undermined the coalition’s collective efforts.
“Despite the sacrifices and loyalty I have shown, Raila went ahead to make his own decision,” he said.
He also dismissed speculation that he could be warming up to President Ruto’s government. “If today I am seen with Ruto or Raila, I will also be labelled a betrayer,” he said, noting how political perceptions are often misused.
