A section of politicians from Kirinyaga County on Thursday, April 17, 2025, decried what they termed as state-sponsored attempts aimed at harassing and intimidating former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Led by Governor Kamau Murango and the area’s Women Representative, Njeri Maina, the leaders called for the security detail of the former president to be reinstated.

“It is the responsibility of every government to ensure that leaders are granted security and are not harassed or intimidated. It is a sad situation, even to our neighbours that the former Deputy President is now being harassed and his security withdrawn, Murango noted.

On her part, Njeri called for improved security for the former DP after a couple of meetings attended by the politician were disrupted by violent groups.

“The president was here in Kirinyaga county, and we listened to him peacefully to the end. Nobody chased him. There is a trend with Gachagua that wherever he goes to address people, goons are sent to the function. It’s happening even in churches, a haven of peace, where people go to worship,” Njeri stated.

She asked the government to allocate security officers to Gachagua.

“I want to tell them they have to give Gachagua maximum security to be able to visit all regions of this nation as he searches for friends wherever he wishes, she stated.

Njeri also challenged leaders to desist from politics of incitement, stating that people are bound to suffer from an oppressive regime and bad governance regardless of their culture or political affiliations.

“Politicians should not incite people against each other. Wherever there is unjust administration, we all hurt from it regardless of what our names are or our origin is, the lawmaker added.

The pair sentiments come after the impeached Deputy President wrote to the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, claiming that his life is in danger.

In a letter dated Tuesday, April 15, 2025, titled ‘Assassination Attempts and Violence Against My Life, the former DP pointed out various instances where he claimed he was targeted.

In the letter, Gachagua detailed two incidents where he claimed his life was targeted.

One incident was on November 28, 2024, when he was attacked and his vehicle was destroyed while attending a funeral in Limuru.

He also mentioned the December 28, 2024 occurrence in Shamata, Nyandarua County, where a teargas canister was lobbed at a function he attended.

The politician wondered why a person arrested during the incident was never disciplined.
